Those of us familiar with these products use them all the time in our homes. There are advantages:
1: Economical. They are usually concentrated and very strong. Most are meant to be diluted with water 5 to 20 times before use. A little goes a long way. Imagine, you buy one jug and get 15 jugs of usable product!
2: Effectiveness. Because of their strength, Industrial / commercial cleaners will clean faster and more thoroughly than household brands.
However, bear in mind, industrial/commercial products are not the buffered, gentle products you may be used to.
Note the following:
1: Read the directions on the label and mix with water to the recommended dilution ratio. You will need your own containers to hold the “Ready to Use” (RTU) product. Label your bottle with the product identifier.
2: Read the precautionary statements on the label to ensure environmental and safety concerns are met. If the product is corrosive the handling instructions may say to wear gloves and eye protection. Or it may be flammable. If so, keep away from open flame or sparks. Note how to safely dispose of the product and container.
3: Air Quality. Some products may emit harmful VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). VOCs are vapors that evaporate from the product. Many Industrial cleaning products are meant to be used outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. If you wish to use such a product indoors make sure you open doors or windows and ventilate the house. Not all VOCs are harmful. For more information on VOCs click this link.
4: Fabrics and Carpet. Always test an inconspicuous spot for colour fastness first
5: Food Preparation Areas. Many industrial / commercial products are not food contact safe. This does not mean you can not use them in the kitchen. But you must rinse the area with potable water after using the product.
6: Solvent Cleaners: Avoid the use of solvents in the home. If needed, use very small amounts as a spotting agent, then ensure adequate ventilation.
With a little knowledge and practice you will most likely love using concentrated cleaners in your home.
